Jehovah Mephalti, God my Deliverer

HE enables us to inherit His promise Josh14:

Pr. Juxy Mathew

‘Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said.”

Although both Joshua and Caleb had received God’s promise, they were yet to see its fulfillment. Caleb, who was eager to see its fulfillment through him, approaches Joshua with the above request.

Who was Caleb?

  • Caleb was from the tribe of Judah. Num13:6

  • He was the prince of that tribe. Num13:2

  • He had another spirit than the Israelites. Num14:24

God Himself testifies of Caleb in Num14:24 saying But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it.” It is also important to note that Caleb was chosen out of 74,600 as confirmed in Num1:26-27 “From the children of Judah, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: those who were numbered of the tribe of Judah were seventy-four thousand six hundred.” Num1:26, 27. Caleb who had the spirit of God was special. The Sovereign God perceived Caleb as one with a different spirit and who fully followed Him.  This is evident in Num 13:20 when Caleb quieted the people who were pessimistic of possessing Canaan and advised them to go at once and take possession for they were well able to overcome it.  Similarly, Pharoah recognised the Spirit of God in Joseph (Gen41:38) that made him so wise and discerning to forge a plan to overcome the famine.

God selected us from our house; we had no credit to speak of, as stated in Eph2:2 “in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,” Therefore, we should examine ourselves to see if we are worthy of God’s calling and if God would find us different from those around us. It is by His grace that we are chosen. Everyone should be prepared to face life’s challenges and accomplish God’s promises.

  • Perfect obedience to God. Num14:24

Caleb was forty years when he received the promise and for forty-five years he remained in perfect obedience to God and in submission to his leaders Moses and Joshua.

  • He was working behind the scenes; we couldn’t hear of him during their journey.
Throughout the forty-five years in the wilderness, Caleb quietly observed all the laws of God and remained obedient to Him. It was his faith in God that led him to bring back good report of the fortified city they had to overcome. During the journey through the wilderness, Caleb believed and waited on God and therefore he discerned the right time to take possession of the city.  God acknowledged Caleb’s faith and therefore chose Him to inherit the land.

The speciality of the mountain

  1. a) God had promised Caleb 45 years ago. Josh14:10

“And now, behold, the Lord has kept me alive, as He said, these forty-five years, ever since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel wandered in the wilderness; and now, here I am this day, eighty-five years old.”

Caleb was forty years old when he was chosen to spy out the land of Canaan. While each spy reported what they saw, Caleb, who fully followed God, expressed his faith in Him. Despite his faith, Caleb endured several troubles for the next forty-five years because he was among wrongdoers.  Throughout these years Caleb remained a strong spiritual support and submitted to the leadership of Moses and Joshua. When Caleb discerned it was the right time for the fulfillment of God’s promise he asked Joshua for the mountain (to inherit the city). He was confident that God would fulfill His promise despite its utterance forty-five years ago. Caleb believed in the faithfulness of the Almighty God, the same God of his ancestor Abraham who saw the fulfillment of God’s promise of descendants after twenty five years of receiving the promise.  This same God remains faithful even today.

  1. b) Caleb knew it was a fortified city. Josh14:12

“Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified.”

Here we see that Caleb had a clear knowledge of the city and therefore spoke that they could overcome it. We too should not rely on our abilities when we receive God’s promise but seek God and allow Him to guide us to make us worthy of the fulfillment of His promise. Even if the fulfillment of our promise seems impossible like the other leaders who saw the city as fortified and large with strong inhabitants, we must have faith like Caleb.  We should confidently claim that God will fulfill His promise and boldly ask to take possession of it.

  1. c) There were Anakims. Josh14:12,15

V.12 “Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the Lord spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the Lord said. V. 15And the name of Hebron formerly was Kirjath Arba (Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim). Then the land had rest from war.”

The leaders brought back bad report of the land they spied on when they saw the descendants of Anak there (Num13:33). There they saw giants who were descendants of Anak and they saw themselves as mere grasshoppers in comparison.  However, in Josh 14:8, 11,12-15 Caleb brought good report and asked to inherit that same land because he fully followed God.

What did Jehovah Mephalti do for him?

1)     God strengthened Caleb at the age of 85 as at 40. Josh 14:7,12.

Although Caleb was eighty-five years old and aware of his physical weakness, he declared that he was as strong as he had been at forty when he received the promise. Caleb’s inner man was strengthened by the Holy Spirit, which made him say this.  Paul in his epistle to the Ephesians writes in Eph3:11 “that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,”.  He also says in 2Cor4:16 “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.” Our inner man has to be renewed daily by the Word of God. We need to be strengthened by faith and faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God.

2)     His testimony was the same. Josh14:12.

Caleb did not waver in his faith from the time he heard the promise although he faced many troubles during the journey.  Heb3:14 advises us to keep the first faith “For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.”. Steadfastness in faith is the hidden secret of a testimony. God’s Word builds faith in your life and takes you forward. In Josh14:12 Caleb asks for the mountain and we see that his testimony was the same as it was forty-five years back.  He knew that with God’s presence he could drive out the Anaks.

3)     Caleb was ready for war if needed. Josh14:12.

Caleb knew the secret of victory lies in pleasing God. He says in Num 14: 8 “If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey.” If God is pleased with you, then you will be victorious. In this pretext Prov24:16 encourages us stating “For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again..”

In Josh14:12 Caleb asked for the mountain and was ready for war.  In Josh 13:1 God told Joshua that he was old and advanced in years yet God did not view Caleb the same way despite his age.  God saw Caleb as wholly following Him and deserving to inherit the land.  Caleb waited in faith for the fulfillment of God’s promise and boldly asked for the fortified city being ready to conqueror it.

4)     The land had rested from war. Josh14:15.
“And the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.”
Thus Caleb inherited the city although it was inhabited by giants.

Let’s examine ourselves based on the above.  Will God delight in our life?  Will he find unwavering faith in us?

We too have unfulfilled promises in our lives and this is due to our diminishing love towards God and waning interest in His promises over time.  As long as we stay close to God, we will discern God’s reminder of His promises to us until He fulfills it for His promises are our inheritance.  We may have to fight a spiritual battle to inherit them.  Therefore, we must prepare ourselves for the spiritual battle to overcome the obstacles that prevent us from inheriting God’s promises. May our lives be transformed to delight God.

Hence, delight in the Lord and He will strengthen you to overcome every hurdle and inherit His promise.
